About the CUNY Energy Institute
The CUNY Energy Institute brings together an interdisciplinary team to develop innovative, economical, and sustainable technologies aimed at achieving national energy self-sufficiency. We educate top-quality engineers and scientists to this end. Led by the Distinguished Chemical Engineering Professor Dr. Sanjoy Banerjee (seen above with some of his team), the CUNY Energy Institute offers top-notch students a world-class opportunity to work side-by-side with multidisciplinary faculty from CUNY’s New York City campuses and be a part of one of the nation’s most ambitious and innovative energy research organizations. The CUNY Energy Institute’s focus areas are electrochemical energy storage, nuclear, and oil/gas research.
CUNY Energy Institute History
The CUNY Energy Institute was formed in 2008 to broaden the scope of the existing Clean Fuels Institute. Headquartered within the The City College of New York (CCNY) and CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering, the CUNY Energy Institute benefits from the resources of all the CUNY campuses. A multidisciplinary team of prestigious faculty from various scientific and engineering fields, as well as industry experts, the CUNY Energy Institute seeks to advance our fundamental understanding of energy and its uses. We attract a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students, who perform cutting-edge energy research with world-class faculty. The CUNY Energy Institute employees over 30 researchers and engineers.

Fostering the next generation of great American scientists and engineers has long been a major goal of the City University of New York, and the CUNY Energy Institute furthers this mission through rigorous course work, research opportunities, and strong mentorship. At the CUNY Energy Institute we seek technological solutions that help lessen our carbon footprint, expand the use of renewable resources on the electric grid, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil supplies. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the CUNY Energy Institute is our commitment to developing innovative, economical technologies that benefit New York and the nation. Our work spans from fundamental energy-related science to innovative engineering solutions and energy technologies. We conceptualize novel energy technologies in the lab and invent practical solutions that meet our national energy needs today.
